Star Bread (Putok)
Star Bread, or Putok, is a lightly sweet Filipino roll with a signature split sugar crust.

Ingredients for Star Bread (Putok)
- 4 cups bread flour or all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup milk powder
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 3/4–1 cup lukewarm water
- 1 tsp instant yeast
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter or margarine, softened
- 1 large egg
- 1 tbsp milk
- Sugar, for topping
How to cook Star Bread (Putok)
- 1.Mix flour, milk powder, sugar, and salt; make a well in the center.
- 2.Add 3/4 cup lukewarm water and yeast, then mix in softened butter to form a dense dough.
- 3.Knead 7–10 minutes until smooth, adding water a tablespoon at a time only if needed.
- 4.Cover dough in a greased bowl and leave in a warm place for 1 hour.
- 5.Divide into 20 balls, place on a parchment-lined tray, snip crosses on top, and rest 30 minutes.
- 6.Whisk egg with milk, brush over rolls, sprinkle sugar, and bake at 180°C/350°F for 18–20 minutes until golden.
