Flan de Manzanas

Flan de Manzanas is a creamy apple custard with caramelized brown sugar, baked in llaneras until softly set.

1 hour 25 minutes · Serves 3

Ingredients for Flan de Manzanas

  • 1 can condensed milk, 370 g
  • 5 tart apples such as Granny Smith, peeled, cored, and cubed
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 5 large eggs, beaten
  • 6 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 3 llaneras

How to cook Flan de Manzanas

  1. 1.Preheat the oven to 170 C. In a saucepan, combine the cubed apples and water, bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for about 15 minutes, until the apples are soft.
  2. 2.Mash the softened apples with a fork and let them cool until no longer hot.
  3. 3.In a bowl, mix the cooled mashed apples with the condensed milk and beaten eggs until evenly combined.
  4. 4.Put 2 tablespoons brown sugar in each llanera. Set each mold over low stovetop heat until the sugar melts, then carefully tilt to coat the bottom with caramel.
  5. 5.Divide the apple custard mixture among the 3 llaneras. Cover each tightly with aluminum foil and place them in a water bath.
  6. 6.Bake for 45 minutes, or until the flan is set with a slight jiggle in the center.
  7. 7.Remove from the oven, cool completely, then chill in the refrigerator before unmolding onto plates and serving.
