Braised Beef - Filipino/Chinese style
This Filipino-Chinese style braised beef is tender and fragrant with star anise, cloves, soy sauce, and bay leaves, and is excellent with hot rice.

Ingredients for Braised Beef - Filipino/Chinese style
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 1 to 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 lb beef brisket, cut into cubes
- 2 to 3 cups water
- 4 tablespoons soy sauce
- 3 to 4 pieces star anise
- 3 to 4 pieces cloves
- 2 bay leaves
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon ground pepper
- 1 cup carrot, cut into 1-inch-thick rounds
- 1/2 tablespoon cornstarch, dissolved in 1/4 cup water
- Chopped spring onions, for garnish
How to cook Braised Beef - Filipino/Chinese style
- 1.Heat oil in a pot over medium heat, then sauté the garlic and onion until slightly softened.
- 2.Add the beef brisket cubes and sear in the hot oil until browned on all sides, about 5 to 7 minutes total.
- 3.Pour in 2 cups water, soy sauce, star anise, cloves, bay leaves, brown sugar, and ground pepper. Bring to a boil, cover, and reduce to low heat.
- 4.Braise for 40 to 50 minutes until the beef is fork-tender. Add a little of the remaining 1 cup water if the pot dries out before the meat is tender.
- 5.Stir in the carrots and cornstarch slurry, then boil for about 5 minutes until the carrots are tender and the sauce thickens.
- 6.Serve over hot rice and garnish with chopped spring onions.
