Sweet and Sour Meatballs

Crisp pork meatballs are finished in a pineapple sweet-and-sour sauce with colorful vegetables.

Ingredients for Sweet and Sour Meatballs

  • 1 kg minced pork
  • 4 tbsp flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 small shallots, finely chopped
  • 9 cloves garlic, minced, divided
  • 1/2 tsp five-spice powder
  • 2 tsp fish sauce
  • 1/2 tsp ground white pepper
  • 1 bird's-eye chilli, finely chopped
  • Salt, to taste
  • Oil, divided
  • 1 can pineapple pieces, juice retained
  • 1 thumb-sized ginger, sliced
  • 1/2 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1/2 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 cup chicken stock
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch mixed with 3 tbsp water
  • 1/4 cup white vinegar
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup tomato ketchup
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 carrots, cut into chunks
  • 1 large red onion, sliced
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

How to cook Sweet and Sour Meatballs

  1. 1.Mix pork, flour, eggs, shallots, 4 cloves garlic, five-spice, fish sauce, white pepper, chilli, and salt. Shape with wet hands.
  2. 2.Deep-fry meatballs in hot oil for 5–7 minutes, depending on size, until cooked through; drain.
  3. 3.Sauté remaining garlic and ginger in oil. Add bell peppers, carrots, and red onion; stir-fry 1 minute.
  4. 4.Add chicken stock, vinegar, sugar, soy sauce, pineapple juice, ketchup, and cornstarch slurry. Boil, then simmer 2 minutes; season with salt and black pepper.
  5. 5.Add pineapple pieces and meatballs, then simmer 2 minutes until coated and hot.
